Conversations with Dr. Stacey Williams
Please join our quarterly hostless dining event with a woman scientist! Dr. Williams’ Bio: Stacey is an Assistant Professor at Notre Dame of Maryland University in the School of Pharmacy. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in 2008. She then transitioned to the FDA and worked as a Consumer Safety Officer. Stacey will talk about how she was able to transition from the FDA back to academia. | Disney Characters Attract Girls to CodingBecome a member of AWIS National and receive monthly newsletters about issues especially geared towards women in science! One of this month’s articles: Disney Characters Attract Girls to CodingCode.org is a non-profit group that offers free tutorials to encourage kids as young as kindergarteners to learn to code. This year, they teamed up with Disney for their second annual "Hour of Code" lesson to encourage more girls to join in. The characters from the movie Frozen, Elsa and Anna, will teach students how to create drawings such as snowflakes and snowmen. The tutorial begins on December 8, 2014. Let her code

Science Camp Coordinator

The Community Science Education Program out of the office of Johns Hopkins Government and Community Affairs is looking for a new Camp Coordinator!
-
Every year, Hopkins hosts a Community Science Camp where 5th graders participate in a week-long daily camp that provides science activities. As camp coordinator you would need to coordinate camp activities and supervise 3 other graduate camp aides. A small stipend will be paid for the week. Interviews to be held throughout the month of September.

The GreenMount School (GMS) is looking for women professionals in STEM fields (especially math, physics, astronomy and computer science) who would be willing to speak with a small group of girls (fifth grade to eighth grade) about their field, how they prepared for it, exciting opportunities, etc. If there is any type of activity that could introduce the girls to the STEM speaker's work, that would be ideal.

Conversations with Dr. Erin Bowers The second installment of our quarterly hostless dining events with a woman scientist! Dr. Bowers’ bio: Erin Bowers is a biotechnology patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. She received a Ph.D. in chemical biology from Johns Hopkins University in 2011, where she performed research into the inhibition and modulation of the histone acetyltransferase enzyme p300. During her time in Baltimore, Erin served as the President of the Greater Baltimore chapter of the Association for Women in Science. Leboy Public Policy Fellowship The Fellow reports to the Executive Director & CEO to advance the Association's legislative agenda and policies on behalf women science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Some examples of duties and assignments for the Fellow include: Tracking legislation and analyzing policy issues at the nexus of gender and science. Working with key AWIS advocacy partners including scientific and engineering societies. Representing AWIS at key coalition meetings and conferences.
